ENGINE

A heart surgeon took his car to his local garage for a monthly service to a poor mechanic.
“So tell me,” says the mechanic, “I’ve been wondering about what we both do for a living, and how much more you get paid than me…”
“Yes?” says the surgeon.
“Well look at this,” says the mechanic, as he worked on a big complicated Audi engine, “I check how it’s running, open it up, fix the valves, and put it all back together so it works good as new. We basically do the same job don’t we? And yet you are paid twenty times what I am – how do you explain that?”
The surgeon thought for a moment, and smiling gently, replied quietly to the mechanic,
“Try it with the engine running.”

  2. I’ve also had it explained this way. The more damage you can do the more you get paid. A backwards way of saying that the more responsibility you carry the more you should be paid. I love the doctor’s come back, with a dose of humour, without bragging about his education and superior abilities.

    1. Yes you are absolutely true. the doctor and mechanic both agreed the work is or can be similar if the things to be operated on are working. They equated a valuable car with a invaluable person .
      Life is incomparable….

  3. Let’s take a look at the value of a car vs the value of life. I think the value attached to aesthetics nowadays is pathetic. Some people actually measure the worth of themselves by the worth if their possessions. That is truly sad

    1. Yes ,you have drawn a hidden point from the story. Here the doctor and mechanic both agreed the work is or can be similar if the things to be operated on are working. They equated a valuable car with a invaluable person .
      I agree by your statements.

  4. Many persons who do manual labor never understand why white collar jobs are more lucrative. At the end of the day work done by using one’s brain , especially higher centers of the brain or cerebral work needs a lot more focus, utilizes only glucose and is stressful.
Where as works that require mechanical skills are in visuo-spatial sketch pad , a different net work that requires less energy , there fore one can drive a vehicle , stitch , cook and still think of a complex problem . Where as a detailed analysis of an abstract problem is impossible with out complete concentration.

    Nice post , enjoyed it.
